Instituto do Coração Optimizes Wheelchair Management with Zebra's RFID Solutions

Instituto do Coração (InCor) has implemented Zebra’s RFID solutions to enhance wheelchair management and efficiency. This initiative aims to reduce asset loss and improve patient care by providing real-time tracking of one of the hospitals most important assets.

Zebra Success Story: Instituto do Coração (InCor)

Overview: Healthcare Challenge

Collaborating with 4NextID, the project includes infrastructure setup, training and monitoring, offering a model for other healthcare institutions to adopt RFID technology for improved operational visibility and asset control.

Benefits / Outcomes

  • Real-time tracking of wheelchairs reduces the time spent searching for critical assets, enhancing efficiency in urgent situations
  • By monitoring wheelchair movements, InCor can prevent losses, ensuring these valuable resources remain available for patient care
  • The RFID solution streamlines daily operations, allowing staff to focus more on patient care rather than inventory management

 About Instituto do Coração

InCor is the largest cardiology center in Latin America, located in Brazil. It is a leader in the Public Assistance Service as well as in research, teaching and innovation.

The Challenge

As a major global center reference, InCor understands that it cannot afford to waste time looking for equipment, because efficiency is crucial when dealing with urgent situations, especially for patients with impaired mobility. To address this challenge, InCor chose to implement monitoring of one of its most important and in demand resources, wheelchairs.

When we partnered with Zebra, we were pleased to learn they understood our challenge and the true meaning of partnership. They wanted to help us build something beneficial for patients. That was always the initial focus for InCor, Zebra and 4NextID. By combining our efforts, we understood we could truly impact the quality of care for our patients.

The Solution

Implementing an RFID solution enabled InCor to manage these valuable assets more effectively. Wheelchairs are expensive, highly-valued assets, and now, with better management, InCor can reduce loses and bring significant benefits to the institution.

4NextID, a Zebra Premier Solution and Registered ISV Partner, helped implement a complete solution. 4NextID provide the infrastructure, fixing antennas, supports and adjusted the correct position of each reading point. With the equipment that Zebra supplies for traceability, 4NextID added a software layer, then implemented the whole solution. It also handled the implementation, the training and managed the project until it went live and into production.

"This project we developed together with InCor is crucial," said Vanderlei Ferreira, Vice President and General Manager, Zebra Technologies Brazil. "We understand that other health institutions, hospitals and clinics here in Brazil need and can also benefit from this RFID technology and use it for so many other applications."

The Zebra Difference: Outcome and Benefits

The solution allows InCor to achieve greater control and efficiency, reducing the time it takes staff to carry out daily checks, as well as in situations in which wheelchairs leave the hospital. InCor has portals that can identify the exit of the assets and trigger an alert in the system. InCor can track the specific wheelchair number and trace its movement via video to see what happened to it.
